Best Practice

In December 2000, the Council applied to the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center (Rural Center) for a Research & Demonstration grant to add the Restorative Economy Project to its CEDS regional strategic planning effort. The Rural Center grant proposal describes the need for the project, and proposes to use the relatively new concept of Natural Capitalism as the basis for the project.

Research

The Natural Capital Institute, founded by Paul Hawken, researches principles and practices leading to social justice and environmental restoration. NCI initiates projects relating to the relationship between human and living systems, with particular emphasis on natural capital, green business, biomimicry, innovative design, and social justice. NCI believes the current downward spiral of environmental and social conditions can be arrested and that a just and restorative economy is possible.
